, fareed. the cabin between obama, biden himself, secretary of defense, chuck hagel pro-iran ingaugement cabinet since the 1979 revolution. these guys seriously do want to do a deal. genuinely wants to try to build confidence with the united states, this is the best administration to do that. now, i think the dilemma he has is that for 24 years since 1989 he has been susupreme leader and he hasn't left the country since 1989 and he sought to preserve the status quo by transforming decisions and now put himself increasingly with back against the wall facing unprecedented international pressure, sanctions, et cetera whereby if he wants to reduce this pressure, either he needs to do a nuclear deal to reduce the pressure or go for nuclear weapon, the so-called pakistan option where by if they get a bomb, they believe that the outside world will be forced to deal with them. but these are both transformative options and both transformative choices for him. so, i think he's put himself in a very comfortable position. >> he's a conservative guy by nature. >> you're a revolutionary un

. defense secretary chuck hagel, his second day on the job, and it may be tomorrow that may be the most defining for his tenure. in fact, hagel now set to meet tomorrow with the joint chiefs of staff in the tank here at the pentagon. that highly secure meeting room to talk about all of this. to get the full rundown on what it will mean for u.s. military readiness if these cuts, as expected, go into effect. $46 billion has to come out of defense spending by the end of september. we have a bit of a look-ahead at what to expect tomorrow. some of it, i think, people will have expected the military to cut. things like, you know, the blue angels, the military aerial demonstration teams, some of the commercials for recruiting, congressional junkets on military aircraft that very rapidly it gets into what they believe is the meat of the u.s. military. the navy, the air force may have to begin to shut down, the navy as much as five navy air wings. the marines and the army cutting field training. that could mean troops already in afghanistan will see longer deployments and future deployments will

the nomination of the former senator, chuck hagel, to be the nation's next secretary of defense. let's go to capitol hill to dana bash. what are you learning? >> reporter: cnn has learned that chuck hagel's confirmation to be the next defense secretary appears to be all but certain. the reason we can report that is by some excellent digging by our producers. what they have found out is they have found at least five republican senators who have said that they would oppose any filibuster to block hagel's nomination. so mathematically what that would mean is even if there would be a filibuster, which is still an if, he would likely have the votes to overcome that and would go on to become the next defense secretary. they talked to a lot of senators, a lot of senators' offices and they came up with five. only two of them are actually going to support hagel's nomination, but the other three, richard burr, john mccain, and todd coburn have all told us they would oppose a filibuster if it came to that. we don't know when the vote will happen. first he has to go through committee. that
